On Thursday I decided to venture out and make the Annual pilgrimage to Alexandra Palace for the Knitting & Stitching show. I've been every year since it started and have worked a stand for the last 7 years. This year due to health and other considerations I had declined to work and wasn't even sure if I'd attend!
I'm glad I went but still cannot quite believe how little there was to tempt me, this is the sum total of my knitty purchases!
The only other purchase was made in a fit of nostalgia
when Em was little (back in the 1970's) I used to make her garments from Clothkits so it seemed only right that I should celebrate their relaunch by buying something for my youngest niece.
I'm trying to decide if there really was nothing inspiring at the show / if it's lost it's thrill now that I can buy many of the featured yarns in my LYS / or I'm just still suffering the after effects of the last years strain.
What do you think?
Posted by Yvonne at October 12, 2008 06:28 PMSuch a rotten year you have had. Heres hoping for much improvement.
I was sad to miss you at Ally P. The only day I didnt do and you were there! I did buy more Jamiesons 1 ply and a book of crochet motifs.
The stand was its usual funny, frustrating, amazing place. We had our return customers as usual and one lefthander who i taught continental knit, who instinctively went back along the same row - continental righ handed! what a star!
Just take very good care of self!
like Dawn I bought less than you and like Daisy, I get the feeling the novelty is wearing off, and as yarns are becoming are becoming more available in the yarn stores there is less and less to ooh and ahh over. I did not go last year and was hoping for a wow factor or inspiration this year. It just means more looking in other places!!
Posted by: johanne at October 26, 2008 11:11 AMI thought I was the only one! - but I figured it was down to either a crappy summer (I am blaming everything on that, as it seems the tail end of the year is coming with a bad case of the Blahhs), but I also suspect that some yarn is almost ubiquitous - while good quality yarn reaching to the far regions of the universe has always sounded like a dream, I guess now it is easier to lay our mitts on it, maybe the really truly special/unique is getting swamped. Now I am as big fan of some of the special dyed yarns and what-not, but after a while you get jaded and think hmmmmmm what is the next special thing (why yes, I am a spoilt brat). What I want right now is really good quality yarn that doesn't try too hard and is in a big enough dye-lot to knit a garment and doesn't scream at me with loads of colours but is shade-on shade of one - with I repeat enough skeins/balls for a garment, sigh......
Posted by: juliet at October 16, 2008 10:12 AMI was looking out for you at the stand - and now I know why I didn't see you. I wasn't hugely inspired to part with my money this year either, but then I had Luke with me and there is nothing like a toddler to distract you from spending money! I usually love all the exhibitions too but I wasn't so awestruck as I have been.
Hi Yvonne, I have been so sorry to read of your health and sadness this last year. I met you at Cardiff last November and you bought some of my handspun yarn. You were such a happy, bubbly person then and took so much pleasure and joy from your stash and knitting. I do hope that time will heal health and unhappiness and you get that back. Will you be at Cardiff this year, if so hope to see you again. Wendy.
Posted by: Wendy at October 13, 2008 02:17 PMI bought less than you! Some hiya hiya dpns, stitchmarkers, 4 skeins of sock yarn and a scarf kit! I think it's due to a recent IKL event, and too much stash. I have stuff from previous AP outings, so didn't want to buy from my usual suppliers until I've knitted up the previous years' offerings.
Posted by: dawn at October 13, 2008 09:13 AMmaybe some of it can be put down to the rotten time you've had lately as well?
Glad you found something so it wasn't a wasted journey:)
I've read several other blogs with people saying the same thing. Maybe the novelty is wearing off?
